Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe offers vertical challenges

Thursday, January 2nd, 2014

Known as Tahoe‘s highest base resort, with an elevation of 8,260 feet and a summit of 9,700 feet, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe has more than 1,200 acres of some of the Sierra’s best powder dropping more than 1,800 vertical feet.

Located a few miles north from Tahoe City, Mt. Rose has partnered with Granlibakken and offers value-added ski and stay packages for the 2014 ski and board season.

With an average annual snowfall of 350 inches, Mt. Rose has been named one of the “10 Hippest Ski Areas You Rarely Hear About” by MSN.com and one of the “10 Best Areas You’ve Never Skied” by SKI magazine.

Of the 60 trails, approximately 20% of the resort runs are for beginners, 30% intermediate, 40% advanced (black diamond), and 10% expert (double black diamond). The longest run is 2.5 miles. Get a feel for things before you go with their trail map.

Mt. Rose has two “six pack” high speed detachable chairs, two fixed grip quad chairs, two fixed grip triple chairs, and two surface lifts, the Flying Jenny and Little Mule. Check out the mountain with their webcams.

Mt. Rose has three terrain parks: DoubleDown, Badlands and the Pondo Parks. Each park is unique in both location and features offered. Parks are redesigned and adjusted on a regular basis.

Looking to brush up on your skills or are you a first-timer? Skiers and boarders can take lessons daily by any number of skilled instructors. First timers have access to three dedicated beginner lifts and are provided beginner-specific rental equipment.

Noteworthy runs are 200-acre The Chutes, an extreme challenge that offers some the longest vert in North America. This means you don’t just get a quick glimpse of a steep run, you get 1000-plus feet of north facing slopes with pitches from 40-55 degrees.

Dining at Mt. Rose includes eight restaurants, bars, and coffee shops with a variety of offerings.

Opened in 2009, Winters Creek Lodge is Mt. Rose’s newly built facility on the “Slide” side. The glass facade lodge and 8,000 square-foot outdoor deck accommodates up to 150 guests inside and features a panoramic view of Washoe Valley and Washoe Lake, fine dining and a Sky Bar.
