Women’s Wellness Weekend Recap

Wednesday, November 13th, 2013

7 a.m. is early for a weekend, but when yoga kicks off Women’s Wellness Weekend it isn’t a terrible way to greet the day. The sun rose with us through the windows creating a tranquil setting for our morning exercise.

7 a.m. yoga really was the perfect way to start the weekend.

Granlibakken is known for their hot breakfast buffet and the spread did not disappoint. After waking up our minds with yoga it was time to fuel our bodies with an assortment of fruit, pastries and hot items. One of the best things about Granlibakken’s breakfast buffet? They cater to food intolerances such as dairy and gluten.

After breakfast it was time to dive in to the day of speakers. Saturdays speakers and topics included: Joyce Mikal-Flynn, Ed.D, FNP, MS – Metahabilitation: Turning Tragedy to Triumph; Jennifer Janiga, MD – Health of Your Skin: Inside & Out; Bob Eslinger, DO, HMD – Intro to Integrative Medicine; Jill Whisler, MS, RDN – Are you Fueled by Your Foods or Fooled; Tiffany McCormack, MD – Is Plastic Surgery Right for Me?; and Suzanne Aberasture, Ph.D – The Life of Your Brain. The topics and presentations are interesting for the general public, but healthcare professionals can earn nine hours of CE credit for an additional $75. If you’re overwhelmed by the list, don’t worry, there are breaks for stretching and lunch. And just because Granlibakken is infamous for their breakfast buffet does not mean you want to miss what they offer for other meals!

The various topics touched on by the speakers educated all attendees.

After all of that learning there was time for socializing and shopping with wine and cheese. To complete the day an optional cash dinner was available in the Cedar House Pub. An early bedtime was needed as Sunday was an early wakeup call as well.

Sunday started with more yoga and another mouthwatering breakfast. A half day of speakers included: Christina Campbell, ND and Stephenie Riley, ND – Common Nutrient Deficiencies; Mel Pohl, MD – Disease of Addiction; and Donna Hartley – Fire Up Your Heart. A break for lunch was followed by an interactive health fair. Massages, acupuncture, make up demonstrations, bone density screenings and nutritional information were just a few highlights available during the fair.

No weekend would be complete without a dance party and the Zumba Party was the perfect way to close the conference. Attendees shook, shimmied and laughed through the last activity. The event includes access to the pool, sauna and hot tub for additional relaxation.

If you arrive early or decide to stay an extra day try out the Treetop Adventure Park located onsite at Granlibakken. Your body will get a work out and your fears will be tested as you zip, climb and soar through the trees. Since you’ll work up an appetite, we’d recommend The Blue Agave in nearby Tahoe City for offsite dining. Try the Pink Coyote or Prickly Pear margaritas and some tacos.

Stay an extra day so you can experience the Treetop Adventure Park.
